How do you balance development with traditional land use?

Development definitely has a lot of benefits...such as good paying jobs, and more money for government that can be used for education, health care, or social services.   At the same time, the land is sacred to  elders, because it has always provided for us...and given Inuit life.  Many people want to make sure that the land is not touched by development, so traditional activities can continue.

So, as a board member of the NPC, how can you make the best choices for how to use land in the future...when not everyone has the same ideas?

(In other words...how are you as an NPC board member supposed to balance development with traditional land use?)

  1. the way I would develop land use with traditional land is by coming together with elders and developers and communicate the areas which are most used by hunting, fishing ect.

If elders did not agree with this development i would explain that this development could help future residents and theirselves with health care, education fees, and building houses.
If all agreed, i would have a board meeting with both sides on planning where development can be placed.

  2. I believe in what Paul Quassa he believes in. Putting Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principles and development together as the world is constantly evolving. I know that each community have different wants and needs, and how they’ll cater towards the economic development as every community have different ways to contribute to it.
On the other hand, you have people not believing in expanding the land use that may help with contributing to development but there’s ways to approach it. As what the NPC has been doing, getting guidance of each community members to show what is a crucial part of the area.
I know it’s hard to “make everyone happy” but just like how Kugluktuk had to sacrifice in order to have Nunavut, we always have to take the bad with the good.

  4. BLOG!
Development would give big things to the Inuit. I would definitely make a public post about using our land for these things so that we can make enough money for a school where it is all Inuit instructors, everything about Inuit, Learning Inuit ways of tools, traveling, language etc... Just bring back Inuit knowledge and techniques. Also any ideas from other Inuit that'll make people interested in this.
Once this is all spoken and figured out and interested by enough people I would bring this up to a meeting and ask for a proposal.

  5. how i would balance development and traditional land use is, to make sure both sides understand each other. have meetings, hear what both has to say and where would take place of the development and to make sure the inuit, elders agree on what will happen.

  6. I would balance development and traditional land use by letting development happen in areas that are known to not to have a lot of caribou frequently or along migration paths, unlike the mine in Rankin Inlet where it is right near the caribou migration path. development is okay but only in areas elders deem okay for development. Also not letting it go past the designated agreed on area of land.
